The Problem
The cluster creation workflow is crucial for data engineers as it helps increase business agility and reduce risks. To enhance the user experience, I conducted usability studies and tests on the existing workflow with 25+ customers. I found that customers were spending too much time remembering things, and there were issues with multiple cluster creation, accessibility, and acknowledgment. The average time on task for the existing workflow in the competitive space was 2 minutes, and competitors used inconsistent ways to create a cluster. There were way too many customer calls which increased the customer churn rate. This presented an opportunity to improve the existing workflow.
The Solution
For enterprise data engineers, I revamped the cluster creation workflow by implementing an efficient wizard pattern that prioritizes relevant information and guided steps. To improve the user experience, I applied laws of proximity, enhanced error handling, and incorporated feedback mechanisms. The resulting workflow is agile, and it includes automated operations.

The process
To enhance the cluster creation workflow, I employed a collaborative and data-driven approach. I collaborated with the product manager, sales and marketing team, engineering team, and designers to understand customers' pain points and gather feedback. Additionally, I conducted usability tests and competitive analysis to inform the design goals, which included improving usability, conducting an accessibility audit, reducing time on task, and increasing task completion rate.
Using Figma, I designed low and high-fidelity mockups while considering stakeholder feedback, and presented design rationales to the team and stakeholders. In usability testing with over 8 participants, the resulting workflow achieved an 87.5% task completion rate, 85 SUS score, and 1 min time on task, outperforming competitors' workflows. The handoff process involved involving all key stakeholders throughout the design process and creating comprehensive design documentation.
